Crime as the Perfect Device with Dinuka McKenzie

  • The Carrington Hotel 15-47 Katoomba Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Is crime writing the perfect device for authors to reflect what’s most important to them? Join crime writer Dinuka McKenzie in conversation with outback noir author Kate Lyons, as they discuss Dinuka’s latest book Taken. Not just a page-turner with a classic twist at its end, Taken explores motherhood, post-natal anxiety, and the juggle of family obligations and careers.

Dinuka McKenzie is an Australian writer and the author of two crime fiction novels, The Torrent and Taken. She is the winner of the 2020 HarperCollins Australia Banjo Prize, and her writing has been shortlisted for the Sisters in Crime Davitt Awards, long-listed for the Richell Prize, and highly commended in the Australian Crime Writers Association – Louie Award. Her short fiction has appeared in the 2022 Dark Deeds Down Under Crime and Thriller Anthology. Dinuka lives in Southern Sydney on Dharawal country with her husband, two kids, and their pet chicken.

Kate Lyons is the author of three novels, The Water Underneath, The Corner of Your Eye and The Far-Back Country. The Water Underneath was runner up in the Australian/Vogel Award and shortlisted for both the Dobbie Award for Fiction and the Fellowship of Australian Writers Melbourne University Press Literature Award.

This event is sponsored by the BAD Sydney Crime Festival. (And if you love crime, you may be interested to know that this Festival will be running from 2-5 November 2023 in Sydney.)
