Weaving Memoir, with Kris Kneen

  • Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 30 Parke Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

People often think a memoir must go from A to B in a timeline that marches with a calendar. Instead, Kris Kneen takes you through a different process of structuring your memoir, demonstrating how to free your writing from the straitjacket of linear time, and instead chase a theme through different parts of your life.

Kris explores the structure of weaving several stories organised by a unifying theme. This method is more like making a basket than building a wall, allowing you to highlight connections and repetitions that could be lost using other methods.

This ‘weaving’ is a method that Kris has used successfully in their three memoirs, Affection, The Three Burials of Lotty Kneen and Fat Girl Dancing.

Kris Kneen is the award-winning author of memoir—Affection and The Three Burials of Lotty Kneen—and fiction: An Uncertain Grace, Steeplechase, Triptych, The Adventures of Holly White and the Incredible Sex Machine, Wintering, as well as the Thomas Shapcott Award-winning poetry collection Eating My Grandmother. They have written and directed broadcast documentaries for SBS and ABC Television. Their latest memoir is Fat Girl Dancing.
