Balancing Defamation Risk and Expression as a Writer

  • Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 30 Parke Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Whether you are a fiction or non-fiction writer, defamation can be an issue if you decide to base your writing on real people. This free session will provide an overview of Australian defamation law and recent case history, discussing how writers can best deal with defamation risk. This session will be presented by Katherine Giles and Anna Spies.

Katherine Giles has been a lawyer for 20 years and is the Head of Legal and Operations at the Arts Law Centre of Australia. She has worked in the legal team at Arts Law, in-house at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and in the intellectual property and media law team at the law firm MinterEllison.

Anna Spies is a senior lawyer at the Arts Law Centre of Australia. She draws on extensive experience to provide clear and practical advice in a range of areas, including copyright, trademarks, patents, designs, confidential information, consumer law, defamation and contracts.

The Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival is grateful to Arts Law for sponsoring and hosting this free session. Arts Law is a national community legal centre for the arts that aims to empower creators through using the law. It regularly advises writers on defamation and other legal issues.
