Freedom and Fiction: Angela O’Keeffe with Amy Sambrooke

  • The Carrington 15-47 Katoomba Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

“It might surprise you that I do not put all my trust in words. Words are wild animals. I keep a respectful distance. I do not hunt them. I let them come to me.” The Sitter, by Angela O’Keeffe

What inspires a novelist to tell a story from the perspective of the long-dead wife of artist Paul Cezanne? And if it could talk, what would the Blue Poles painting by Jackson Pollock say about the world?

Join Angela O’Keeffe, author of the intriguing books The Sitter and Night Blue for a discussion with Amy Sambrooke about the emboldening power of creativity, and how novelists push back against constraints and expectations.

Angela O’Keeffe grew up with nine siblings on a farm in the Lockyer Valley, Queensland. Her first novel, Night Blue, was shortlisted for the UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing and the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. Her latest novel is The Sitter.

Amy Sambrooke is the Artistic Director (joint) of the 2023 Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival. Amy was the Creative Director of Varuna the National Writers' House from 2017 - 2023, and was the founding Creative Director of the Blue Mountains Writers' Festival. Amy has worked across public policy, media and the arts.
