A Wide and Open Land – Walking the Last of Western Sydney’s Woodlands

  • The Carrington Hotel 15-47 Katoomba Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Four years ago, Blue Mountains resident Peter Ridgeway set out to walk across the Cumberland Plains of Sydney, carrying his food and water and sleeping under the stars. In exploring one of the least-known landscapes in Australia, he discovered how our towns, social identities and even accents are influenced by the most unexpected features of Sydney’s natural world. Join Peter Ridgeway and Bianca Nogrady as they discuss the intricate connections between land, community and culture.

Peter Ridgeway is an ecologist who has spent the last two decades studying, exploring and teaching on the Cumberland Plain. His written work, A Wide & Open Land – Walking the Last of Western Sydney’s Woodlands, explores the cultural and natural landscape just beyond Sydney's door.

Bianca Nogrady is a freelance science journalist, author, broadcaster and founding president of the Science Journalists Association of Australia. She is the author of Climate Change: How We Can Get to Carbon Zero and The End: The Human Experience of Death. Her work has been published in WIRED, The Guardian and The Saturday Paper.
