The Rules of Writing Rom-Com with Melanie Saward

  • Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 30 Parke Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

There's no denying that romantic comedy is absolutely booming now: walk into any bookshop and you'll be confronted by a wall of fun, illustrative covers and cutesy titles. But despite this, publishers in Australia are lagging behind in this space and are desperately seeking on-trend romance.

Come and learn the rules of writing rom-com, and discover how to leverage the conventions and traditions of the genre to write a story that publishers are looking for. Suitable for any writer interested in romance, whether that's a middle-grade rom-com or something more spicy. LGBTQIA+ writers are encouraged to attend.

Melanie Saward is a proud descendant of the Bigambul and Wakka Wakka peoples. She is a writer, editor and university lecturer based in Tulmur (Ipswich), Queensland. She is the managing editor of Djed Press, and her writing has been published in Flock, Overland, Kill Your Darlings and New Australian Fiction. Her debut novel, Burn, has just been released by Affirm Press.
